What are some of the "series of political crises" that shook Egypt after the War of 1948 and the Creation of Israel? (page 188)

Can you describe one aspect of Pan-Arabism?

Can you describe one aspect of the Suez War of 1956?

Can you describe one cause and one effect of the Six Day War?

- mr. gibbs

After the war of 1948 and the creation of Israel one large political crises was surfaced. Egypt supposly gained independence however Britain still controled the Suez Canal. Then Nasser a passionate hot headed fighter rose to power and overthrew the king. He became popular because one of his main goal was the British are still in Egypt and attempted to fight against the political power.

"Can you describe one aspect of the Suez War of 1956?"

Israel/French/British invade Egypt and win war and gain control of Suez Canal... but the US and Soviet Union convince them to give the Suez Canal back to the Arabs

The six day war was between Israel, and Arab countries, Egypt, Syria, and Jordan. Palestinian guerrilla attacks on Israel from bases in Syria which resulted in a feud between the countries. Many misunderstanding followed by both sides of the argument. Egypt answered by ordering the withdrawal of UN peacekeeping forces from the Sinai Peninsula and by moving troops into the area

Why was the Aswan Dame so important?

"What would happen to someone if it was discovered that they didn't agree with Nassar?(because he has a short temper)"

I don't think anything serious would happen, the person who disagrees with Nasser would just have to deal with Nasser's descions or leave Egypt. It would be difficult for them to try to convince people out of Nassers descions. But i dont think anything severe would happen, just that they wouldnt get there way and not have the power to be heard.

It was important because it could provide Egypt with losts of electric power and control of the annual flooding of the Nile.

"Can you describe one cause of the Six Day War?"

One cause of the Six Day war was that the Egyptians began moving a force of soviet-supplied tanks toward the borders of Israel. Israel must of felt threatened so the attacked.

"Can you describe one effect of the Six Day War?"

On effect of the six day was was that Israel had gained the Gaza Strip, The west bank and more land.

My Questions

Why would Israelis want more land. It would just make it harder to have a purely Jewish state.

During the six day war why did non of the other Arab nations help Egypt when they were being invaded by the Israelis?

What made the concept of Pan-Arabism so important?

it was Nassers dream of a unified Arab state, and a form of nationalism that cut across political boundaries. it was supported by the belief that all speakers of arabic are part of one nation

Nasser controlling the the high dam at aswan on the nile was a key concept, mainly because it provided Egypt with much needed electicity and it anually controlled the flooding of the Nile
