WHAT TO WATCH FOR...
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
Joe Biden
Will he be condescending? He'd better keep in check any feeling that his opponent isn't up to the job – unless she provides an opening so unequivocal that he avoids looking like he is not treating women fairly.
Concise or long-winded? Mr. Biden is a veteran of countless Sunday talk shows, floor fights and confirmation hearings. That doesn't mean he's equipped to ace this debate. Sound bites are king on TV.
Sarah Palin
Ready to lead or overprepped? She gives a great speech, but her handful of interviews exposed a struggle with policy nuances, particularly in foreign affairs, Mr. Biden's forte. She's rehearsed for days. Will she come off informed and natural – or like she's struggling to recall what she's supposed to say?
Details or platitudes: The McCain campaign has shielded Ms. Palin from the sort of free-for-all questioning she'll face tonight. In her gubernatorial debates and recent interviews, she's resorted to generalities when specifics eluded her.
