10 Steps to Political Cartoon Analysis
Step 1 –Identify the People and Symbols. How do you know who is who? Or what is what?
Step 2 – Are there any labels used that might help me? If so, what are they?
Step 3 – Is there any exaggeration going on in the cartoon? Describe what and how.
Step 4 – Is there some overlying analogy that the cartoonists used to help make his point? If so, briefly explain.
Step 5 – Can you find any examples of irony in the cartoon?
Step 6 – What event or events do you think inspired this cartoon?
Step 7 – What point is the cartoonist trying to make? What is he pointing out to the reader? What issue is he poking fun at?
Step 8 – What Political opinions does the cartoonist have?
Step 9 – Ask yourself, “Do I agree with this cartoon?” Explain your feelings.
Step 10 – Laugh out loud at how funny the cartoon is!!!!!
